Petra Trip by Ferry from Sharm El Sheikh | One-Day Trip to Petra, Jordan by Boat
Petra was built in the 6th century BC by the Nabataeans and is often described as the “rose-red city half as old as time.” It’s hard to overstate the beauty of this place. As you wander through it, you’ll be overwhelmed by the immense scale of the colorful sandstone gorge, carved monuments, tombs, and obelisks. The BBC described Petra, rediscovered by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812, as “one of the 40 places you must see before you die.”
Pick-Up and Ferry Transfer
We will pick you up from your hotel in Sharm El Sheikh at 2:00 AM and transfer you by minibus to Taba Port, where you will board the ferry to Aqaba, Jordan. From there, you’ll continue by air-conditioned bus to Petra, where your guided tour begins.
Petra and the Treasury
We will enter Petra on foot through a stunningly narrow and winding gorge over a kilometer long, which opens dramatically to reveal the magnificent Treasury.
The Roman Theatre
We continue walking to the Roman Theatre, originally built by the Nabataean civilization in the early 1st century AD. The Romans later expanded and improved it after annexing the kingdom in 106 AD. They achieved this by ruthlessly cutting through a street of homes and tombs to enlarge the back of the auditorium, which could hold around 3,000 spectators at the time.
Ancient Petra Tombs
The next stop on your guided tour is the Royal Tombs (the Rainbow Tomb is a must-see for photographers), along with hundreds of other monuments and obelisks, all carved from Petra’s uniquely pink-red sandstone.
Lunch in the City Center
Walking through the Roman-Byzantine colonnaded street of Petra brings us to the city center, where you’ll enjoy lunch at the Mövenpick Hotel.
Al-Habees Fortress
After lunch, we continue our tour to Al-Habees Hill, topped by a Crusader-era fortress, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the deep canyons and uniquely colored rock formations.
Free Time and Shopping in Aqaba
After experiencing Petra’s incredible sights, you will be taken back to Aqaba for one hour of free time — perfect for shopping or relaxing with a drink.
Return to Sharm El Sheikh
Following your time in Aqaba, you will be transferred to the port to catch the ferry back to Taba, and from there you will be driven back to your hotel in Sharm El Sheikh by air-conditioned minibus.
